New Year – New Perspective

New Year – New Perspective

I used to be so overzealous at the beginning of a new year. I would take inventory of all that was not working and begin to stack a bunch of unrealistic resolutions on top of each other and before I could even begin working on them I would feel totally exhausted and overwhelmed! Through all the awesome self-development work I have done with Landmark and Tony Robbins, I have learned there is a much better way to cause positive and sustainable change in our lives. It’s really all about the habits we either do or do not do, on a daily basis, that can cause lasting change. These days, instead of saying I want to drop 25 lbs, I just focus on what actions I can take today around my health and wellbeing. For me that means just getting in 45 minutes of exercise so that I can award myself a small smiley face sticker on my calendar for getting it done. If I can do that consistently, I know that I will eventually get to my end goal.

When we shift our focus over to our daily practices we can set ourselves up to realize change. And those small changes can cause shifts in our behavior. When you stack them up over time they can create a significant transformation. So, instead of focusing on the grandiose long term results we desire, start by asking ourselves what can I do right now to achieve the outcome I want most.

So, this year when you find yourself wanting to take on the world in 2018, maybe pause for a moment and consider what Lao Tzu once said. “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Just take a few small steps and do them consistently and you will move yourself closer to what you want. But realize that you must simply stay in action in order to set yourself up for success. Happy 2018!

    • Amen. You remind me of this quote:

“I am in competition with no one. I run my own race. I have no desire to play the game of being better than anyone. I just aim to improve, to be better than I was before. That’s me, and I’m free.”
